Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has started a new Twitter account @GingrichEspanol. The Spanish language Twitter account, which started earlier this month, offers similar tweet to his “regular” account @NewtGingrich. The GOP commentator, who has always been an early adopter to new media, is again trying to to reach out to the Latino community. (maybe build some bridges??)
I wasn’t surprised to see the news of Newt Gingrich’s Spanish-language twitter account on Latino blog La Plaza. Gingrich has always tried to expand the GOP and his conservative message to the Latino community. Sometimes he has seamlessly and successfully communicated to Hispanics. He has done Spanish language YouTube videos, gone on Spanish media, has always had Spanish speaking staff and has a Spanish language web page http://www.newt.org/ParaLatinos.
Sometimes Gingrich has failed. Some big examples are Gingrich’s comments that have been VERY poorly received with Latinos include calling Spanish a ghetto language and his twitter post calling Sototmayor a racist.
I think Gingrich has a great idea. More Republicans need to reach out to the community and communicate in ways friendly to Hispanic-Americans. His new tweets are more a gesture of good faith and an attempt to continue working with the Latino community. Love him or hate him, the guy is always thinking and always trying. No one is perfect but I appreciate his committment to always moving forward.
