Republican candidate for for U.S. Senate, Marco Rubio, is challenging his top rival, Florida Governor Charlie Crist, to a series of duals debates across the state of Florida. The 10 debates would cover all of Florida’s 11 media markets.
According to the Tallahassee Democrat Rubio wrote a letter to Crist proposing the challenge. It stated:
“Because Florida’s next U.S. senator will be entrusted with steering our state and our country during an era of serious domestic and international challenges, it is imperative that we provide Floridians with numerous opportunities to learn more about the choice before them in this election.”
Rubio is riding high on a small, but substantial, victory winning a straw poll conducted by the Republican Party of Pasco County, next door to Crist’s home county of Pinellas, Florida. Rubio beat Crist 73 to 9.
The debate challenge came on the eve of a big Crist fundraiser in Washington D.C. The fresh faced Rubio recognized Crist’s three decades of elected office as a big reason he was a “formidable fundraiser.” Crist has broken several fundraising records in the sunshine state.
Naked Politics is reporting some of the biggest names in the Senate will be at tonight’s event. The fundraiser will almost be like a get together for those in Republican leadership who snubbed Rubio for Crist. Much to the rage of many conservative activists, The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) quickly endorsed Crist over Rubio within hours of Crist’s announcement to run for U.S. Senate. There are rumors that the NRSC had promised Rubio they would not get involved in the primary.
Tonight’s guest list includes:
Those expected to show: [NRSC] Committee chair John Cornyn, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and John McCain.
The invite, obtained by The Hill, says Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander will also be there, along with “GOP power players” Charlie Black, Ben Ginsberg, former Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi and Recording Industry Association of America CEO Mitch Bainwol.
Wonder what a Rubio V. Crist showdown would look like? Here is a preview of the two….
