Yet again Harry Reid made an idiotic statement about Latinos… he continues to think that ALL Hispanics are alike.

In a recent interview Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was discussing fellow Senator Marco Rubio, a Hispanic Republican from Florida. Sen. Reid said Sen. Rubio didn’t “understand” who he was… eluding that Sen. Rubio was out of touch with his “Hispanic-ness” because he is Hispanic and Republican.

Hot Air has a great write-up by John Sexton:

Harry Reid: “Marco Rubio has to understand who he is…”

About two weeks ago, Harry Reid was interviewed for a Hispanic-oriented political show called Mariowire. The interviewer asks Reid for his opinion of Marco Rubio whom, he notes, talks like a member of the GOP despite the fact that he is “Latino.” Listen to Reid’s response:

Harry Reid seems to have trouble wrapping his head around the concept that someone can be authentically Hispanic and Republican. As you can see in the clip above, Sen. Rubio believes his views are perfectly consistent with his genuine experience growing up in America.

Sen. Reid ridiculous statements are insulting to all Latinos. Sen. Reid apparently thinks that all 50 million Latinos in the U.S. are the same and must think the same.

Hispanic are considered swing voters because of their diversity in population and ideology. Recent surveys indicated that about 1/3 of Hispanics consider themselves “conservative,” 1/3 identify as “moderate,” and the rest self-identified as “liberal.” Clearly there is room in the Latino community for difference of thought and a variety of representatives.

This is not the first time Sen. Harry Reid has insulted the intelligence of Latinos. Here he is back in October 2010 when the Majority Leader said “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.”

and here is then candidate Marco Rubio correcting him back in 2010: (more…)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s gaffe saying “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, okay. Do I need to say more?” is still infuriating many Hispanic voters. A new ad by an independent group is capitalizing on the Reid’s foot-in-mouth moment to highlight the Senator’s failed economic policies in his home state of Nevada.

Columnist Ruben Navarrette wrote a great piece titled “Harry Reid Doesn’t Speak For All Latinos.” Navarrete writes:

“Harry Reid can wonder all he wants about why any Hispanic could be a Republican. I’ve been wondering something myself: In light of such flagrant condescension and an obvious lack of regard, why would any self-respecting Hispanic – in Nevada or anywhere else – support Harry Reid?”

Navarrette says what I, and many other Latinos, have wondered in the days since the Senate Majority Leader’s idiotic statement – why would any self-respecting Hispanic voter, of any political parry, support Reid? The Nevada Senator’s has a long history of insensitive, idiotic and hypocritical statements. He has blocked immigration reform and then lies to the public about the reasons. His “I-know-better-then-you” attitude exemplifies his disconnect with voters, and especially Latinos.

Check out Navarrette’s full piece for other Reid gaffes, political hypocrisy and his real record with Latino issues.

Latinos and Latino organizations continue to attack U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for his ridiculous comments questioning Latino membership in the Republican Party. Reid said “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, OK. Do I need to say more?” (VIDEO)

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), which represents over 6,000 Hispanic elected and appointed officials, issued a statement condemning Senator Reid’s political foot-in-mouth moment:

“Latinos are as diverse in their political views as everyone else living in this great nation, and are not necessarily identified solely with one political party. The community strives to be full participants in the American political process, regardless of political affiliation.

NALEO appreciates the importance and enormous value of Latinos participating in all political parties.”

Beyond national organizations, many local leaders are upset at Reid’s comments. Rafael Rivadeneira, candidate for State Representative of the 41st District of Illinois penned an open letter to Senator Reid, explaining diez (ten) reasons a Latino would vote Republican. UPDATE:

A flurry of candidates and Latino organizations have condemned Harry Reid’s divisive statements attacking the idea of conservative Latino voters. The Majority Leader, who has done little to discuss Latino issues in Nevada or across the nation, attacked anyone who, God forbid, disagreed with his political philosophy. Here are some statements from Hispanic Republicans:

The Hispanic Leadership Fund (LINK) President, Mario Lopez:

“The fact is, Harry Reid has accomplished nothing positive for Nevada and has offered little to the Hispanic community except government dependency, radical job-destroying economic policies, and direct attacks on our values exemplified by the taxpayer funding of abortions in Obamacare.  In fact, Harry Reid even voted for poison pill amendments to kill immigration reform in 2007.”

“Harry Reid wanting to anoint himself as some sort of authority on what it means to be Hispanic is the height of arrogance from an intellectually bankrupt politician.”

Jon Barela, Republican candidate for New Mexico’s First Congressional District:

“Senator Reid’s comments were completely off-base, and they reflect a misguided attitude among Democratic Party leaders that Hispanics can be taken for granted as automatic supporters of their far-left agenda. Hispanics in New Mexico, just like Americans of all backgrounds, are struggling through an economic downturn that continues to kill jobs. The Washington response – taxes, bailouts, and government spending – isn’t solving the problem; in fact, it’s stifling economic growth and creating mounds of debt for future generations to shoulder. Debt cannot be the legacy we leave to our children. We must instead pass on the unique and uplifting economic freedom and prosperity that was given to us, the very values that led me to the Republican Party in the first place. It is terribly condescending for Reid to take Hispanics for granted – especially as his agenda fails to renew America’s economic promise.”

Francisco Canseco, Republican candidate for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District:

“For Harry Reid to assume that the Hispanic community is one single voice is demeaning and insulting to the many hard working, Americans across our country who are of Hispanic decent.  It is racism, pure and simple.”  Canseco said. “As the son of Mexican immigrants, growing up my parents taught my siblings and me the values of hard work, self sufficiency and freedom.  Americans of Hispanic decent are Republicans and Democrats and every political persuasion in between.  I guess it’s offensive to Harry Reid that many Hispanics support lowering taxes for families, stopping wasteful government spending and ending the job killing policies Democrats are forcing on families and small businesses.  I believe that the Senate Majority Leader’s comments are not only offensive but sadly typical of the Democrat mindset in Washington.”

Harry Reid made an idiotic statement today as he spoke to a group of Latinos in his home state of Nevada. The Majority Leader said “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.”

This statement is beyond ludicrous, and is a racially/ethnically charged speech from a Majority Leader loosing support both nationally and in his home state of Nevada.

Maybe Reid is trying to hide his horrible record to his Democrat Latino voting base (rising unemployment, record foreclosures, broken education system), and has failed to bring up immigration reform. You should remember that Senator Reid was a key vote in killing the immigration reform debate in 2007. Instead, Reid bowed down to big labor, which is strongly against any form of comprehensive package and a guest worker program.

Reid is in a tough spot this election. He is caught in a tought re-election bid against Republican Sharron Angle and needs to pander to Latino Democrats in his home state as he has failed miserably as a Senator to deliver on many of his promises. In his role as Senate Majority Leader he has failed as well. President Obama promised to bring up immigration reform in his first year in office; yet Reid nor Obama have pushed for a vote. The the lack of immigration reform equals another campaign promise President Obama has broken. The numbers speak for themselves, the latest Gallup number shows that President Obama’s support among Hispanics is down from 69% in January to 48% now.

The irony of today’s statement is that it comes on the same day that Reid camp tried to push a bogus story about Angle’s relationship with the Latino press. I guess “King Harry,” as the Angle campaign has dubbed him, would prefer to tell Latinos what to do and take their vote for granted then do actual work on Latino issues.

The reality is that Latinos are a diverse ethnicity, many of which consider them selves conservative. The top issues with Hispanics continue to be jobs and the economy. While there are more registered Hispanic Democrats then Republicans, many would say the Latino vote is still up for grabs. Republicans have done a much better job of finding and supporting Hispanic leaders, and there are more Hispanic candidates, who are registered Republicans, currently running for office then ever before.

Maybe all of the anti-conservative Latino anger is really Harry Reid’s bitter feelings that a Hispanic Republican candidate, Brian Sandoval, is currently ahead in the polls against his son, Rory Reid, in the race for Nevada Governor. Sandoval is the first Hispanic candidate elected to statewide office in Nevada.
